Project: : Bath Central School District Gymnasium
Owner: Bath CSD
Location: Bath, NY

Installation Date: 2010
Product: SignaFlor 7+2

Bath Central School District (Bath CSD) hired SignaSports™ in 2010 to install 5,600sqft of its SignaFlor 7+2 polyurethane athletic surface. The synthetic surface was an ideal choice for the school’s envisioned application in their new elementary school gymnasium, which would host basketball games and a variety of other activities such as hopscotch boards, agility ladders, and kickball.

Our installation crew arrived on site and began the first steps of the installation process, including verification of facility measurements and material quantity and the completion of moisture testing. Upon completing a Relative Humidity moisture test, which is a test that measures the amount of humidity in the slab relative to the surrounding air, Signature’s crew noticed levels which surpassed the requirements of the product specifications. Subsequently, SignaSports™ immediately notified the school district of the circumstances and provided 2 courses of action that outlined both the advantages and disadvantages of each approach:

Option 1: Bath CSD can select to install a 2?part, polyurethane moisture barrier, which will control moisture levels, allow the contractor and school district to complete the gymnasium portion according to schedule, and allow the school district to occupy the space sooner; however, the additional purchase would increase the overall construction cost.
Option 2: Bath CSD can select to dehumidify the gymnasium over the course of several weeks making sure to monitor the concrete moisture levels with periodic RH testing. Once levels fall below the required threshold, Signature can proceed with the installation of SignaFlor. This option would mitigate costs; however, the approach would also delay the completion date and not allow the school to occupy the space for several additional weeks.

After evaluating the action plans and further consultation with Signature Sports, the school district instructed Signature Sports to install a moisture barrier. Signature utilized an Ardex MC Plus Moisture Mitigation polyurethane system, which is engineered to control concrete moisture levels up to 98% relative humidity. The choice to select a moisture barrier guaranteed the avoidance of any future moisture?related issues and allowed the district to occupy the space much sooner than anticipated. The floor was soon completed, including a center court gym logo and a 3’ border. The district’s satisfaction with their new polyurethane gymnasium surface encouraged them to continue to collaborate with Signature Sports on a second gymnasium facility.
